Deus ex machina or Trojan Horse? notes on four decades of smart cities

The call for smart cities has an increasing potential to shape cities around the world throughout the last four decades, while Brazilian critical urban studies have delved little into understanding its consequences. The current paper, taking a sceptical perspective on the smart cities’ capability of being a possible answer for challenges in urban environments in Brazil, exposes the main shapes and contents carried by smart cities in their trajectories with highlighted transformations, from their beginning in the crises of Fordist capitalism to its most recent stage, the platform capitalism smart cities, while shaping different elements in this process. The current paper also investigates the main definitions of smart cities proposed by different authors, aiming to unveil the political-economic content in the definitions. The main conclusion is that, despite coming over as positive impact on life’s quality, contradictorily, smart cities have potential to exacerbate urban conflicts and inequalities.
