The article investigates the role of agglomerations in the industrial exports of Brazilian
municipalities during the first decade of the years 2000. In studying how agglomerations influence exports, we
are looking for insights into the regional competitiveness in the country and, consequently, into its economic
and social development and possible trends of convergence and regional disparity. Using Exploratory Spatial
Analysis and a Probit model, we find that agglomerations increase a region’s probability of exporting. In addi
tion to that, the distribution of industrial exports is still very uneven in the Brazilian space, with few exports
agglomerations, which are concentrated mainly in the southern portion of the territory. Thus, the remaining
states that still want to export do not benefit from the positive externalities generated in these agglomerations,
making export activity even more arduous.
